Report: Pets and humans on Japan’s quirky ‘cat island’ safe

A small island that counts just 100 people as inhabitants, but is home to many more stray cats has reportedly survived the destruction from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami last Friday, according to a group that is trying to save animals after the disaster.

"Just to give everyone an update on Tashirojima, the cat island. The people and cats are safe but short of food," the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support group posted in a Facebook message on Monday. "A volunteer looked into transporting food by boat, but there is too much debris in the water. A helicopter is the only way. The army will probably get a helicopter ready soon so we are looking into the possibility of asking them to take cat food too."

The fishing town's residents built a shrine to the numerous cats in their midst. Tashirojima--known familiarly as "Cat Island"--has become a tourist attraction for animal lovers. "The cats here have always been something like a lucky charm for us who bring good catch. We enshrine them because they are important to us," local fisherman Tsuneo Endo said in a 2009 CCTV article. Feeding the strays is thought to bring good fortune.

Three animal groups have joined forces to form the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue effort; the coalition aims to promote the rescue and adoption of lost and stray animals, and to ensure that will not be euthanized. The groups are HEART-Tokushima, Animal Friends Niigata and Japan Cat Network. WorldVets is partnering with those groups to help in their rescue mission. Some of the relief workers told CNN that foreigners fleeing the country have left behind their pets. Other dogs, especially in rural areas, were tied up when they were left behind and may now have no way to get food. (After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, 250,000 pets were left stranded, PBS estimates.)

On its Facebook page, the group says it is trying to confirm that the two dogs in this touching video have been rescued.

Animals are also doing some rescuing of their own. Six labradors were deployed from California to help Japanese authorities on search-and-rescue missions in the hardest-hit areas in Northeast Japan, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

Phase 1

Boo actually liked being shaved with the clippers. He thought I was brushing him but like brushing him he only likes it in 10-15 minute doses so this was what came off during phase 1.
Im hoping to have his shave done by this weekend so he can have a bath!

And then ....

Boo .. here to continue with what seems like never ending events ... Im the good cat the one that hasnt cost a millizion dollars to fix up or keep alive. .... and the one thats allergic to pesky fleas.

Momy got me home after the vet visit ... she was told to put antiotic cream on my scabbies to make them heal and get all betters ...

This is what shes been putting on me. It makes the skin feel good and I dont lick if the skin is moist and not dry so :)

Then momy went digging through the kitty medicine drawer and hit the jack pot ... a whole box of flea goo .. she thought she was going to have to order it and it was going to be 3 weeks before it got here but thankfully for everyone she already had some. :)

We use advantage - purple for fat kitties

Momy had 8 of them ... so everyone but Bean got some.
Bean was chosen to be left out this go becuse he is the easiest to give it to and he never goes outside - whereas the others will hide when the goo comes out.

Oh the Horror ....

Boo here again ... where was I ... Oh yes thats right I was ITCHY ... scratchy .... MISERABLE

Momy too me to see the vet. I dont like to go in the box and I dont like the car rides .. I cried and begged and pleeded for her to let me out. She just kept talking to me and I kept "singing"

We got there ... and saw a vet we had never seen before. Dr Metrey was really nice. She said I was very handsome. I weighed in at 18.5 pounds and she said I was healthy and not overweight because Im very long :) yay! I liked her already. She looked at my furs and my scabs and my sores and she gave me a SHOT! It was horrible!!! for all of about 10 seconds and immediately I began to feel better. It was an allergy shot that makes the itchies feel better and made me calm some. It was wonderfuL!

Then she did this ....

Thats right she shaved a landing strip down part of my back ... at least I cant see it but Momy giggled at me. Once she got the area that was affected cleared she rubbed some goo on it and if I thought it felt better before aahhh it felt even better after that. The site was not infected so no antibotics for me ..yay! and momy was told to put cream on the sores and I would be better than ever soon.

Lets talk about Fleas

FLEAS are BAD

Boo Here to talk to you about Fleas ... you see I am allergic to fleas!
So 1 little flea bite makes me more than miserable.

The bite from a single flea will have a minimal effect on a normal cat, but a cat with flea allergy will experience immediate itching and swelling. Flea allergy is the feline allergic skin disorder most commonly found. Cats that have it are hypersensitive to fleabites; their skin becomes inflamed, irritated and itchy in reaction to allergen in the saliva that fleas pass into the skin when they bite. The skin reaction and intense itching can lead to hair loss and skin lesions.

Common symptoms include increased grooming, rubbing, or scratching; loss of hair; crusts or erosions of the skin; and red scab-like bumps. Red, raised skin lesions also can be noted. Fleas or flea feces may be found in the fur.

Flea allergy is the most common feline allergic skin disorder, affecting cats with an abnormal sensitivity to saliva fleas inject into the skin when they bite. In reaction to fleabites, allergic cats will have inflammation and irritation of their skin—not to mention intense itchiness. Hair loss and skin lesions can result when a cat scratches or bites its irritated skin. Several different skin lesions can result from the allergic reaction, but miliary dermatitis, which consists of raised bumps with a dried blood scab, is the most common lesion noted.

I am sure at this point you are wondering where Im going with this ... well ....

I was itchy,
scratchy,
flakey,
and fussy ....
not to mention the scabbs and sores on my back ...

Momy took me to the V-E-T!

You will NEVER guess what they did to me ...
