Pit bull abandoned in NJ gains worldwide following
Our friend Skeletor posted about Patrick a week or so ago ... check this out about Patrick now. We hope the mean bad person is .... well something really mean ... they deserve it
NEWARK, N.J. – When an emaciated pit bull found at the bottom of a trash chute in New Jersey was rushed to a veterinary emergency room last month, doctors there thought he would be dead within the hour.
Instead, the scrappy pup, nicknamed Patrick, has defied the odds and is getting stronger by the day.
"He is a tremendous fighter," said Dr. Thomas Scavelli, the director and founder of the Garden State Veterinary Specialists, the pet hospital in Tinton Falls where Patrick is being treated. "There are very few animals, or any life form, that could have gone through and survived what he has, and really never looked back."
Hospital staffers, who named the dog for his reddish fur and because he was found the day before St. Patrick's Day, have been chronicling his progress on their website and a Facebook page that has garnered fans from around the world. He's received hundreds of emails, donations, gifts and letters from those inspired by his tale of survival.
When Patrick was brought to the hospital after being rescued by officials at the Associated Humane Societies, he was so starved, emaciated and dehydrated he was curled into a ball, unable to walk or stand. His ribcage protruded, he weighed about 20 pounds — roughly 30 pounds less than average — and was covered in sores with parts of skin hanging off him, according to Patricia Smillie-Scavelli, Thomas Scavelli's wife and the administrator of the hospital.
"Everyone thought that, you bring in an animal like that, that looks like it's really just a corpse, you put it to sleep," Smillie-Scavelli said. "But of course, he looked up at you with those eyes, and you say: How can you give up on this dog? How can you, when he's not giving up on life? So, we gave him that second chance, and he has just run with it, and thrived."
Today, after weeks of emergency measures that included a transfusion of three pints of dog blood, a special diet, medicine and physical therapy, Patrick continues gaining weight, is finally eating solid food, and enjoys taking outdoor walks in the sun and playing with the many toys that well-wishers have sent him.
"This is not a month of starvation," Thomas Scavelli said. "This is a lifetime probably, or at least months and months of neglect, and to see the way he cares for people and trusts people, that's really been the most interesting and rewarding thing to see about the canine spirit."
Kisha Curtis of Newark was charged with two fourth-degree offenses for "tormenting and torturing" an animal by failing to provide food and water, prosecutors said. The charges could carry a maximum jail sentence of 18 months and a fine of up to $10,000. She also faces two abandonment charges punishable by up to six months in jail with a $1,000 fine.
Authorities said Curtis tied the dog to a railing in her Newark apartment building and left the state for more than a week. A janitor later found the emaciated dog in a trash bin.
Curtis, who was released on bail, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Curtis' mother told reporters at her daughter's court hearing that the dog had been given to Kisha but she could not take care of it, so she'd tied it up outside hoping somebody else would take it.
Now, the dog that prosecutors say had been left for dead has been inundated with adoption offers.
The Essex County courthouse has received more than 600 letters and faxes from around the world expressing concern for the dog and urging swift and harsh punishment for Curtis. The hospital ordered 500 thank-you cards with Patrick's picture to mail to those who sent collars, dog shirts, toys, scrapbook pages or dog blankets embroidered with Patrick's name, and it is fast running out.
Animal welfare officials in New Jersey are warning people touched by Patrick's story to beware of donation scams that are using his image and story to raise funds. The Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey is urging anyone wishing to donate to make sure they give to legitimate charities that help animals.
Meanwhile, Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark, where Patrick was found, has started a fundraising drive to build a new state-of-the-art city animal shelter in Patrick's name, to ease overcrowding and call attention to the plight of abused or homeless animals.
Officials at the animal hospital where Patrick is being cared for say he is a long way from being healthy enough to be placed up for adoption and faces some health issues related to his prolonged starvation. He is still too weak for surgery to find out about an unknown foreign object in his stomach, doctors said.
For now, he seems at home at the hospital, where he follows staff around, enjoys being patted and played with, and watches attentively as they open the many gifts and letters he receives each day.
"In the 17 years we've been here we've never seen this type of response to an animal," Patricia Smillie-Scavelli said. "There's something about Patrick that has really sparked interest, honestly, from throughout the entire world."

Spring is here .... maybe
Its a bit scary to say that .... as the weather here has been crazy .. seems mother nature cant get it right ... that or winter and summer are fighting and wont let poor spring in ... we have been watching the birdies and the robins are back. Some of the flowers are starting the pop up. It seems that it wants to be warm outside then it starts raining, sleeting and even snowing. In the last 3 days we have seen rain, snow, sleet, hail, thunder, sun and wind .... its been 40 degrees during the day one day and gonna be 82 tomorrow ... CRAZY!!!
Last evening Momy went for a walk around the neighborhood. Last summer when she stopped walking inside she was going for 5 miles - yesterday she only did a mile and a half outside and did another mile inside. She was very happy about the warm and the fresh air but walking outside is different than inside ... Shes hoping its nice this evening and she can do it again. She had a bit of a hard time yesterday cause Auntie C is her walking buddy but she cant walk that far or that fast right now ... has to get baby "P" here and then all 3 of them can walk.
Oh and Puddy .... baby humans kinda scare us too ... glad it will be Auntie C's ... as we are the only babies in this house :)

Its been super crazy around here. Momy was workin on a baby shower for Auntie C ... as shes havin human baby soon ... we have kittie cousins that live with them and Tiny's mom and dad live with them too. but baby "P" is due in May ... its been talked that he will come early ... and hes gonna be BIG .... WOAH

Report: Pets and humans on Japan’s quirky ‘cat island’ safe
A small island that counts just 100 people as inhabitants, but is home to many more stray cats has reportedly survived the destruction from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami last Friday, according to a group that is trying to save animals after the disaster.
"Just to give everyone an update on Tashirojima, the cat island. The people and cats are safe but short of food," the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support group posted in a Facebook message on Monday. "A volunteer looked into transporting food by boat, but there is too much debris in the water. A helicopter is the only way. The army will probably get a helicopter ready soon so we are looking into the possibility of asking them to take cat food too."
The fishing town's residents built a shrine to the numerous cats in their midst. Tashirojima--known familiarly as "Cat Island"--has become a tourist attraction for animal lovers. "The cats here have always been something like a lucky charm for us who bring good catch. We enshrine them because they are important to us," local fisherman Tsuneo Endo said in a 2009 CCTV article. Feeding the strays is thought to bring good fortune.
Three animal groups have joined forces to form the Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue effort; the coalition aims to promote the rescue and adoption of lost and stray animals, and to ensure that will not be euthanized. The groups are HEART-Tokushima, Animal Friends Niigata and Japan Cat Network. WorldVets is partnering with those groups to help in their rescue mission. Some of the relief workers told CNN that foreigners fleeing the country have left behind their pets. Other dogs, especially in rural areas, were tied up when they were left behind and may now have no way to get food. (After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, 250,000 pets were left stranded, PBS estimates.)
On its Facebook page, the group says it is trying to confirm that the two dogs in this touching video have been rescued.
Animals are also doing some rescuing of their own. Six labradors were deployed from California to help Japanese authorities on search-and-rescue missions in the hardest-hit areas in Northeast Japan, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
